The emergence of the biotechnology industry is one of the most significant products of the Knowledge Economy in Madrid Region. Biotechnology is the most urban of high technologies as it requires a sustained physical presence and face to face relationships with the universities, hospitals, and governmental entities and Madrid Region is very well suited for its development. Madrid Bioscience Region has become one of the most important centres of Life Science R&D in Europe, a place where pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, biotech related companies, CROs, hospitals, research centres, universities and financing agencies meet and cooperate.

The Regional Ministry of Economy and Technology Innovation in close collaboration with the Madrid Biotechnology Companies Association (BioMadrid) have recently launched an initiative to promote the Madrid Biosicence Region as a Biocluster of international excellence. Industry, public research, hospitals, services, higher education and public administrations all work together in order to create a world-class bioscience environment that can help the growth and expansion of a highly competitive Bioindustry.

Furthermore PROMOMADRID (the Investment Attraction Office for the Region of Madrid) is very interested in attracting biotechnology projects to the Region of Madrid and offer its services to foreign companies interested in establishing businesses in the Region.

Key figures of Madrid Bioscience Region

• 400 companies and 24,000 direct jobs (pharmaceutical,
  biotech and medical device companies, CROs and academic research centres).
• Highest R+D investment by biotechnology private companies in Spain (83.% of the Spanish total).
• Highest number of full dedicated biotechnology companies in Spain (32 % of the Spanish total).
• Highest number of biomedical and health sciences scientific publications in Spain (31 % of the Spanish total). Spain occupies the 11th place in the world, and the 7 th place among the European countries in this scientific field.
• 5,000 researchers working in public research centres and Universities in Madrid in the Life Sciences.
• Each year more than 600 new PhDs in the Life Sciences.
• 75 health care establishments with more than 20.000 beds.
• Clinical trials: around 27.000 patients involved in more than 1.000 clinical trials each year.
