Origins of the association
In June 2004, 20 biotech companies from Madrid participated in a meeting to exchange views and ideas about the Biotechnology sector in Madrid. During that meeting the idea of creating an Association of biotechnology companies from the Comunidad de Madrid arouse, as a means to promote and facilitate the development of the industrial sector in Madrid. Right after that the Association of Biotechnology Companies of the Madrid Community (BioMadrid) was created, being the 20 companies the principal founders.
There are now 42 companies associated in Biomadrid whose main features are:
- Most of them are SMES (less than 50 employees).
- Important percentage of their budgets is for R&D activities.
- High degree qualifications of most of their employees.
Main areas of activity
BioMadrid has focused most of its activities in representing its associate’s interests against different public administration, mainly the Autonomous Govern of Madrid. It has also devoted time and resources to obtain more support form the public bodies, supporting the launching of specific Plan to promote the Biotechnology sector in the region and create the Madrid Biocluster
